SDG 3 - Good Health + Well Being

North America

For SDG3, Good Health and Wellbeing, we travel to various locations in the US South to feature WŌC@Rest®. Created by the Women’s Foundation of the South (WFS), WŌC@Rest® is a bold approach to philanthropy, investing in women-led non-profit infrastructures and the wellbeing of Women of Color (WOC) leaders. Philanthropy in the American South is rooted in structural racism; WFS disrupts this by centering racial and gender equity with wellbeing from the start. WOC leaders fight tirelessly for equity, justice, healing, and prosperity in their home communities, and are susceptible to mental and physical burnout. WŌC@Rest® counters the idea that rest is a luxury, reframing rest as a necessary investment. We capture stories from two cohorts participating in WFS’s healing retreats, documenting how WŌC@Rest® uplifts wellbeing in their leadership roles and the communities they serve. These changemakers are shifting the narrative about social and gender justice, while amplifying unique southern WOC sisterhoods.

"At the Women’s Foundation of the South, we value mother wit, equity justice, sisterhood, power-sharing, ingenuity, self-determination, and community wisdom. Our WŌC@Rest® program counters the idea that rest is a luxury, by reframing rest as a necessary investment in the lives of Women and Girls of Color."

-Carmen James Randolph, Founding President and CEO,

Women’s Foundation of the South

From the WFS website: "WFS’s mission is to center and invest in the collective power, health, well-being, economic security, and leadership of womxn and girls of color in the US South. In short, we work to ensure their health, wealth, and power.

WFS envisions a flourishing South where womxn and girls of color are healthy, safe, and well-resourced to determine their own destinies and ensure that they and their families thrive. For this reason, WFS is committed to being a sustainable organization and a permanent, endowed institution that serves as a gateway for donors, foundations, corporations, and individual investors to maximize the social impact of their investments in womxn and girls of color in the South.

WFS transforms the model of traditional philanthropy by centering racial and gender equity from the start, serving womxn and girls of color. We aim to change the economic trajectory of at least 2.5 million womxn and girls of color by 2031."

*the use of “womxn” includes trans womxn and gender non-conforming people.
